A sensitization workshop cum review meeting of State Level Coordination Committee, Haryana was held on April 12, 2018 at Mini Secretariat, Sector 17, Chandigarh. The agenda of the workshop was to bring together all the stakeholders of Tobacco Control in the Government setup on a single platform to sensitize the officers and boost the implementation of the Tobacco Control laws. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mr. Amit Jha, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Health), Govt. of Haryana. Dr. Usha Gupta, Director (NCD), Haryana, Dr. Rajpal Sekhon, State Program/Nodal Officer, NTCP,Haryana, Dr.Rana J Singh, Deputy Director, The Union (SEAR), Dr. Sonu Goyal, Additional Professor, School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh and Ms. Opinder Preet Kaur, President, Generation Saviour Association were also present during this workshop. Directions were given to the Education Department by Mr. Amit Jha, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Health) to install specified warning signage in the Education campuses. The Departments were directed to issue letters to print Challan books to penalize the violators under Section 4 and 6b of COTPA legislation. The schools should declare themselves as SMOKE FREE CAMPUS. They should also assure that tobacco is not sold within 100 yards from the outer boundary. A letter is to be written to ACS, Transport regarding prevalent smoking in buses and bus stands. They were also instructed to conduct a sensitization training of the drivers and conductors for the same. Directions will be issued to Civil Surgeons to install a Drop Box at the entrance of the District and Sub Divisional Hospitals to drop tobacco products before entering. The hospitals should ensure immediate compliance by receiving a certificate from the Civil Surgeon. The issue of opening a centralized Bank Account under NTCP to deposit the Challan money was raised by Dr. Usha Gupta. The importance of the participation of the Police Department was highlighted by Mr. Amit Jha, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Health), to successfully implement COTPA. Dr. Usha Gupta suggested designating one representative from each department as a Nodal Officer for Tobacco Control to attend the SLCC meetings regularly for better communication and coordination. Dr.Rana asked the Departments to print their own IEC material. The issue of banning public smoking on a priority was discussed. The meeting ended with a positive note as the representatives of the various departments of Haryana government were sensitized.
